Top 10 Love Songs

As it’s Valentine’s Day, I thought I’d compile a list of my personal favourite Love/Romantic songs, including snippets of lyrics I love from each song. I tried to limit myself to songs which are mostly contemporary, as otherwise this would have been yet another list of well-loved 60s and 70s classics – Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel etc.

Hope you enjoy them. And check out all the songs via the Tidal playlist link I created below.

10 – What You Don’t Do by Lianne La Havas

It’s what you don’t do, the games you don’t play
I know you love me, I don’t need proof

9 – Fade Into You by Clare Bowen and Sam Palladio

If you were the ocean and I was the sun
If the day made me heavy and gravity won
If I was the red and you were the blue
I could just fade into you

8 – Between Sheets by Imogen Heap

You and me between sheets
It just doesn’t get better than this

7 – I Don’t Know by Lisa Hannigan

I don’t know if you can dance
If the thought ever occurred to you
If you eat what you’ve been given or you push it ’round your plate
I’d like to cook for you

6 – Stick With Me Baby by Robert Plant & Alison Krauss

Everybody’s been a-talkin’; they say our love wasn’t real
That it would soon be over; that’s not the way that I feel
But I don’t worry, honey; let them say what they may
Come on and stick with me, baby; we’ll find a way

5 – Foolish Love by Rufus Wainwright

I don’t want to hold you and feel so helpless
I don’t want to smell you and lose my senses
And smile in slow motion
With eyes in love

4 – In Spite of Ourselves by John Prine & Iris Dement

She thinks all my jokes are corny
Convict movies make her horny
She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs
Swears like a sailor when shaves her legs
She takes a lickin’
And keeps on tickin’
I’m never gonna let her go

3 – Take It With Me by Tom Waits

Phone’s off the hook
No one knows where we are
It’s a long time since I drank champagne
The ocean is blue, as blue as your eyes
I’m gonna take it with me when I go

2 – Mid Air by Paul Buchanan

For everything that life was worth
The fallen snow, the virgin birth
I can see her standing in mid air

1 – Mirrorball by Elbow

I plant the kind of kiss
That wouldn’t wake a baby
On the self-same face
That wouldn’t let me sleep
And the street is singing with my feet
And dawn gives me a shadow I know to be taller
All down to you dear
Everything has changed
